Steam Frame: Valve publishes CAD files and example boards for DIY accessories
Valve releases CAD files for the Steam Frame core module, head strap and controllers, plus front port docs and two USB hub boards. Non-commercial only.
Valve has set up a public repository with design data for its Steam Frame VR headset. Anyone who wants to build mounts, grips or their own electronics for the headset now gets official dimensions instead of guesswork. The latest update is dated 13 October 2026 and added more detail around the nose bridge of the core module.
What the repository contains
- CAD files: simplified (“stripped down”) models of the core module, the head strap and the controllers. The internals are left out, but outer dimensions and mounting points are included.
- Front expansion port: a PDF with the pinout of the port above the nose, plus DXF drawings for a matching board. According to the document, two camera interfaces and a PCIe link share the lines there.
- Two example boards: a full USB 3.0 hub in Altium (breakout, flex cable and PCIe to USB adapter) and a minimal version in KiCad. Valve explicitly advises against using the KiCad board for a real accessory because it sits rigidly on the port.
- Controllers: a PDF showing where the tracking LEDs sit. That matters for anyone printing grips or covers without blocking the tracking.
Licence and liability
The files are released under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0. Printing, modifying and sharing your own parts is allowed, with attribution and under the same licence. Commercial use, such as selling printed parts, requires a separate licence from Valve.
Valve provides the material as is and may change the hardware design at any time. It accepts no responsibility for damage caused by accessories that are not “Steam Frame Compatible”. According to the licence text, opening the enclosure or connecting non-compatible hardware to the electrical ports voids the warranty. Parts that only attach on the outside are the lower-risk place to start.
